![]() Mario RPG had the misfortune of not coming out until the N64 was just right around the corner.Īlso, it’s kinda hard to compare Mario RPG against Chrono and FF, both of which went on to literally define JRPGs on the SNES. I know for a fact that SMRPG was one of the lesser known titles for SNES, a lot of my friends have confirmed this when they have played games like Killer Instinct but have never even heard of SMRPG, despite playing Paper Mario and the other Mario RPGs that came later. Times Hits were another big deal, it injected life into the traditional turn based RPG where you just select and attack and wait for it to be over. That Top-Down view is still one of my favorite angles for a platformer wearing RPG clothes. When the game was first in the works, some drawings were made of Mario on a horse with a sword, but the creators knew that didn’t fit Mario’s aesthetic, choosing to go with a more childish version of weapons that led to the shells and hammers and sticks that ultimately made it into the game. I have played and beaten the game in just about every way possible. Hello, I would consider myself a huge SMRPG fan. But then a different team continued the Tales of franchise so you can essentially look at early Star Ocean and early Tales as alternate evolutionary paths of Tales of Phantasia handled by different developers. The developer of the original SNES game split off and made Star Ocean which is suuuper similar. ![]() So if someone was asking about Mario RPGs this isn't the first one I would recommend, but it is interesting to go back and look at it as a historical seed and then see how different developers extrapolated in different directions.Īnother good example of this is Tales of Phantasia. I think Paper Mario 2 and Mario and Luigi 3 are absolutely better than this, but also I think Mario and Luigi 2 and Paper Mario Sticker Star are absolutely worse. I think both sequel franchises made games both better and worse than this original game. It's gotten two sequels - Xenoblade X went hard as an open world game, then Xenoblade 2 went all in as a JRPG. That game was part open world game and part JRPG. It honestly reminds me of the original Xenoblade. Paper Mario took the humor concept to make it way funnier. Mario and Luigi took the combat concept and blew that out to make it way better. ![]() It spawned two different sequel franchises that spun off in different ways.
